I found the meaning of Two Bob...
People in The Gambia like listening music especially reggae. I can say they enjoy the life. Most of the population is Muslim where as they celebrate Christmas all together with the minorities. Evenings reggae music surrounds all the pubs. Just like Amsterdam people walk smoking marijuana. Even though it’s forbidden Nobody bothers. On our way to Albreda I asked the driver ‘Omar’ whether he knew what 2bob was. He explained that to me :
‘When the first British Forces came for the slaves they paid the slaves’ family 2bobs as a kind of compensation. Everybody wanted to become a slave to have a better life those days’ he said. ‘So whenever the people saw a white man they started to call them two bob. After so many years bobs turn in to pounds but white men have still being called as two bobs.’
On our way to the past...
Bob bobby bobobob bob and Bob again… ‘What is two Bob ok it’s enough I couldn’t find the answer but anyway’ I said to my wife who never understand why I was so insisted on. ‘I gave it up’. She didn’t bother much though…
We were actually in a very nice hotel in the Gambia but our room had some technical problems like floating all over the floor! Yet we were happy. We went outside the hotel to take a taxi to one of the historical monuments ‘Albreda’ which was a French exclave in The Gambia on the north bank of the Gambia River, variously described as a 'trading post' or a 'slave fort'. It was first established by the French in 1681, though it was previously settled by an indigenous population. The land was given to the French by the local ruler, Niumi Mansa, because his people were reliant on trade with Europeans. The French settlement was never very large (never more than one factory) but was inconvenient for the British, who otherwise had a monopoly on trade on the Gambia River, including possessing James Island, fulfilling a similar function less than two miles away on the opposite bank. There was constant tension and occasional skirmishes between the two powers. It was transferred from the French colonial empire to the British empire in 1857. Nowadays it contains a slave museum.
What is TWO BOB?
When I was at the small streets of the UK’s ex-colony Gambia, not only the small children but also some of the people were calling me as ‘two bob’. But what was two Bob? Why were they calling me like that. However I felt myself like a pop-star walking at the shopping mall and signing his CD’s for the fans. Such an enormous attention for being a minority has never made me such happy before. I had to find out why they were calling me as ‘TWO BOB’. Asking couple of locals, I decided to search it on the internet. ‘The world biggest library’ the internet consists lots of information as a result it wasn’t a big deal to search for a phrase of two words. (At least I thought so!) Clicking google brought me in to the middle of a real chaos 'millions of web pages'. Bob must be the World one of the most used names.
⟿ Bob is degene die niet drinkt als hij rijdt.
⟿Home - BOB Opleiding, Training en Advies
⟿Welkom bij zanger Bob
⟿ bobdebouwer.startpagina.nl
⟿ This ugly drunk puppet is Bob
⟿ Bob English Senior Vice President…
were just some of the unnecessary information I came across. At the page of 47 on the Google I found an explanation that was clarifying ‘two bob’.
Two-Bob
'Two-Bob' In former times two bob was two shillings, since a bob was a shilling. The coin worth two bob was called a florin. This coin was almost identical size to the modern twenty cent piece, brought in with the change over to decimel currency in 1966, and which is also still known as two-bob.
Something worth two-bob was pretty cheap and thus we get the phrase 'to go like a two bob watch' which means to work or perform badly.Clearly Watches in this price range were not very reliable. Amongst lairs there was the two bob lair, a two bob boss is a petty official.
The children of the Gambia were they asking me for money then? What about the people? Were they only indulging me for money? I think so… But wait a minute why are they still asking two bob? Why not € or $. I should find the answer on my question but I couldn’t ...
